Michael Mills was also on target twice in an impressive showing from Chris Moore's side, who will now face Crystal Palace in the next round as they look to win the tournament for the first time since a Paul Gascoigne-inspired team lifted the trophy in 1985.

There were strong performances throughout but it was 17-year-old Ferreira - born in Ashington to Brazilian parents - who took home the matchball with a headline-grabbing display at Whitley Park.

United went ahead inside the opening seconds through a superb Mills strike, with the 16-year-old drilling into the top corner before the same player doubled the Magpies' advantage eight minutes later.

This time, with first-teamers Lewis Miley and John Ruddy among those watching on, he cut in from the left and sent a low effort zipping beyond the Portsmouth goalkeeper.

Taya Sengarr pulled one back for Pompey, who had a flurry of half-chances before Ferreira grabbed his first of the evening, finishing well after being slipped in by Rory Finneran shortly before the break.

His second came early in the second half, with Mills turning provider, before he completed his hat-trick by finishing from close range after good wing play from substitute Alfie Seldon.

The visitors grabbed a second consolation in the dying seconds, with Brandon Downey beating George Mair, but United progressed with a five-star show.
