Newcastle United defender Dan Burn is hopeful the squad can respond in winning fashion ahead of Wednesday's UEFA Champions League clash against Athletic Club [kick-off 8pm GMT].

The Magpies welcome the La Liga outfit to Tyneside for their fourth Champions League league-phase fixture as they aim to avenge Sunday's 3-1 defeat away at West Ham United, with their search for a first Premier League victory of the 2025/26 season continuing.

Their home form is a stark contrast to their displays on the road, though, as they target a fifth consecutive victory at St. James' Park and Burn made an honest assessment of his side's "tough" away run, with one win recorded in their last nine away fixtures.

The 33-year-old, who has featured in every minute of Newcastle's Premier League and Champions League campaigns so far this season, said: "You can see that the team had an off day and it was frustrating. We let ourselves down as we really wanted to make amends for the away form that it's been this season and push on.

“The frustrating thing is that we've got the Champions League and I think everybody knows that we'll turn up for that game, the crowd will be buzzing, we'll be buzzing and it's just about trying to replicate those performances away.

“I think the years that we've done well, the first year that we qualified for the Champions League, we weren't always playing great away from home, but we always picked up results, so maybe we need to do more of the ugly side of the game that we were known for at the time, and we’ve probably got away from that just from the evolution of the squad.”

Burn, into his fifth season with his boyhood club since arriving from Brighton & Hove Albion in January 2022, believes the squad have the ability to bounce back from an uncharacteristic performance against the Hammers, highlighting similar fixtures in previous seasons which have then provoked a bright upturn in results.

The four-time England international added: "The gaffer spoke about having honest reflections. It's very easy to just look over results like that but I feel we've always been very good about being honest with each other and speaking about when things aren't going well.

"We had Brentford last year [a 4-2 defeat] and Bournemouth at home [last season] but every season that we've been here, there's been a result where it's been a wake-up call and we need to get back to what we're doing before going on good runs.

"It's nothing we're worried about. I'd love to sit here and we've won every single away game but that isn't the case. For us, it's how we respond and working towards getting a win."

Burn was part of the United side during the 2022/23 campaign that gained an unpopular reputation amongst fellow Premier League clubs for showing an "ugly" side to their game, with Newcastle gaining Champions League qualification for the first time in 20 years after a top-four finish.

The versatile Geordie, who has played as a left-back for Newcastle's last eight matches in all competitions, is keen for the Magpies to rediscover that style at times in order to "pick up points", particularly away from home.

“I'd probably [say] just be a little bit more ugly with stuff," Burn explained. "I think we were well-known a few years ago for, I don't want to say it, but something ‘housery’ and probably a lot of the stuff that's come in has pushed us away from that but I think sometimes if you go away from home, it's important to not be beaten as well.

“I think we were always quite ugly and bullied teams, and that was the way that we went about it, but I feel like as you progress and want to push on, you move away from that because you bring in better quality players.

“We play a different type of football but I think there's always a place for that in the game. Arsenal, for instance, are quite good at doing that, but are also playing very, very good football, top of the league and performing well.

“I think it's important that you can mix games up sometimes. I think possibly sometimes, especially on Sunday, a little bit too nice, but we need to be a bit more compact and a bit more resilient.”
